NOLI TANGERE
For most people, and particularly for children, not being touched is a punishment and harmful to health. “Do not touch” is an exclamation parents use to their children when they start their forbidden discovery of life. Noli Tangere, “do not touch” in Latin, is the title of the catalogue and 2012 solo exhibition of the same name by Lidia Palumbi in Naples.
Palumbi studied at Academy Minerva and has lived and worked in the Netherlands since the eighties. She has regular exhibitions in her native country Italy. Nearly all her sculptures are made of bronze and are her own castings. Palumbi creates subtle, often delicate sculptures that, in spite of their small size , appear monumental. The image returning in this catalogue is that of being bandaged, which can both refer to the beginning as to the end of life; both to being secure as well as to being cut off. In the various texts in Italian and English written by a cultural inheritance principal, an art historian and a psychiatrist respectively, not so much the formalistic principles are described as the scope of the emotions and experiences evoked by Palumbi’s sculptures or those that may be underlying them. The catalogue of simple design, in black and white with brown as a second colour, does justice to Lidia Palumbi’s work and gives a good impression of the development she has gone through from 1988 to the present. Noli Tangere is an attractive professional publication.
